Former Democratic presidential candidate Tulsi Gabbard officially announced her switch to the Republican Party during a Trump rally on Tuesday in Greensboro, North Carolina, a critical swing state for the upcoming election.
Gabbard recently took on the role of honorary co-chair for Trump's campaign transition team, joining Robert F. Kennedy Jr., another former Democrat.
TULSI GABBARD SAYS SHE WOULD BE 'HONORED' TO JOIN A POTENTIAL TRUMP ADMINISTRATION
In her remarks, Gabbard expressed her respect for President Trump’s leadership in "transforming the Republican Party back into a party of the people and a party of peace," which influenced her decision.
"I'm proud to stand here today with you, President Trump, and announce that I’m joining the Republican Party. I am joining the party of the people," Gabbard declared.
"The party of equality. The party founded to fight against and abolish slavery in this country. It’s the party of common sense, led by a president who has the courage and strength to advocate for peace," Gabbard stated.
"Thank you very much, Tulsi. That’s fantastic. Wow, what a surprise," Trump replied. "She’s been independent for a long time. This is a wonderful thing, a great honor. Thank you, Tulsi."
FORMER DEMOCRAT TULSI GABBARD ENDORSES TRUMP IN THE 2024 PRESIDENTIAL RACE
Tulsi Gabbard served as vice chair of the Democratic National Committee from 2013 to 2016 before resigning to officially endorse Sen. Bernie Sanders (D-Vt.) for president.
Gabbard, who ran as a Democrat in the 2020 presidential election, famously challenged then-candidate Kamala Harris during a primary debate, criticizing her record as a prosecutor and California attorney general.
At that time, Gabbard highlighted Harris's prosecution of numerous marijuana-related cases and her influence on California's cash bail system.
